Axe Handle workshop

A two day Axe handle and handling course where you will learn to design and fit an Ash handle to a  hatchet/foresters axe head

You will learn how to sharpen your new tool and make a sheath for it out of leather. 

an axe head is provided on the course.

On the final day we go through how to safely use an Axe and cover some safe handling techniques.




Course Content

-Axe anatomy

-Axe handle design and efficiency

-Carving Ash handles with traditional hand tools such as spokeshaves, planes and rasps. 

-Fitting a new handle to the Axe head

-Finishing the new handle

-Sharpening your Axe

-Making a leather sheath and belt loop

-Safe Axe use and different techniques

Accommodation will need to be booked in advanced by you as it is separate to the price of the workshop;

  • Thin working gloves if new to carving
  • Water bottle
  • Torch and spare batteries
  • Small first aid kit, including plasters, and any personal medication
  • Wash kit and towel, biodegradable soap 
  • Knife, fork and spoon
  • Mug, bowl & plate

  • Outdoor clothing and plenty of layers even in the summer to suit all weather from cold to hot, wet to dry.
  • Please wear walking boots for both protection in the workshop and walking in the surrounding area. 
  • Swim suit for optional swimming in the surrounding area or a sauna at the Damson Dene if it is open
