An opportunity to step into an ancient craft rooted in land and skill. This workshop is both physical and all‑consuming.
It uses ancient methods with the odd hairdryer and involves actively working the tannings into the hide entirely by hand. There’s time spent on your knees, leaning over the frame, and continuously working the hide. It’s labor-intensive and time‑consuming, yet completely absorbing as the hours seem to fly.
The development of the skin into leather happens right before your eyes, and the process has a way of keeping you locked in.
You’re connecting deeply with ancient methods, natural materials, and every hide is completely different.
The tannings will react differently to each hide and the way each person pushes the tannings in will influence the outcome too.
Both hides and tannings are locally sourced from the South Lakes, and the finished product is like a fingerprint, unique and holding all the information of who, where, what, and when - people, place, time, and nature.
If you’re drawn to practical knowledge, natural materials, and hands‑on learning, this workshop offers a chance to engage deeply with a traditional craft that has shaped human survival for thousands of years.
For the past 20 years, Ffion has been immersed in the study and practice of natural materials and traditional crafts and their significance in our thrival around the world. As part of an alternative life and workstyle, she has long incorporated the preparation of roadkill and other unused animal hides, honoring these materials by turning them into something lasting and useful.
Mission: To rekindle ancestral knowledge whilst encouraging others to relearn lost skills and preserve hides through hands-on learning.
