Skeinned Hazel frame & Willow Weaving Basketry

Handwoven wicker basket with a sturdy handle on a rustic wooden surface.

This two-day basketry course offers an immersive introduction to traditional Hazel frame and Willow weaving techniques, set in the beautiful surroundings of  The Lake District, Witherslack.

Working with Hazel and Willow, you’ll be guided step by step through the process of making a strong, functional, Skeinned basket.

The first day will see us learning about material selection, preparing materials by splitting, cleaving and dressing to produce all the elements for constructing this type of basket.

Day two we return to our basketry elements and go through the process of  seeing how the materials we prepared the day before come together to form a frame basket.

Teaching is paced and supportive, with an emphasis on learning through doing, problem-solving and developing confidence with natural materials through play.

Skeinned Willow techniques are currently critically endangered and we aim to provide a high-quality teaching experience to prevent their extinction. All our Hazel comes from coppiced woodland, a regenerative management practice that has been around for centuries.

Alongside practical skills, there will be space to explore the wider context of basketry, woodland management including coppicing and regenerative craft practices. You’ll leave not only with a finished basket, but with a solid foundation of skills you can build on in your own practice.

All tools and materials are provided for both days.

The days will involve standing, handwork and some physical effort, though adaptations can be discussed where needed.

This course is suitable for both  beginners and those with some experience who would like to deepen their understanding of structure, material behavior and traditional hand techniques.

Both days include a hearty lunch and Saturday an evening meal to follow at the end of the day, providing an opportunity to discuss and reflect on our days’ learnings.
