ToTheRoot will be working alongside a.woodsman (Adam Logan) to deliver an action packed two days of learning traditional tanning techniques. You will be guided through the process of tanning your very own sheep skin to take away and learn how to apply this technique to other hides and furs.
This workshop will deliver examples, explanations, demonstrations, and talks around the versatile nature of skin and fur, and how we can essentially arrive at very different end products by selecting a certain tanning procedure.
In overview we will discuss and explore raw hide, buckskin, vegetable tanned leather, and fur on tanning.
You will leave the course with an appreciation of the tanners art as well as a wholistic understanding of what can be created from various mammal and fish skins.
Adam has over a decade of experience teaching students how to tan deer hides, fish skins and create functional and beautiful clothing and equipment from these products that go on to be used out in the field during expeditions to both Sweden and Canada during the boreal winter season.
Ffion has spent the last 17 years studying and experimenting with natural materials and traditional crafts. In this time, preparation of road kill and other animal hides (that would otherwise go to waste) have been part and parcel of an alternative life/workstyle. Her latest drive is to re-kindle the ancestral knowledge of tanning and to encourage the preservation of otherwise wasted hides for those who are interested to re-learn how.
